Window Film
Q: Is it permissible to place window film over rated glass assemblies on fire-rated doors, so you cannot look through them? If so, does the film also needed to be of a rated material or is there such a thing?
A: I don’t know of a film that has been listed to UL 10C for use on existing glazing in fire doors. That doesn’t mean one doesn’t exist, but I couldn’t find one in the UL directory. There are definitely fire-rated films, but they are used in the manufacturing of glazing and not applied in the field. I checked with Technical Glass Products and they did not know of a field-applied film that is listed for use on fire-protection-rated glazing or fire-resistance-rated glazing. If you have a particular product in mind, you could ask the manufacturer about their listings and approvals.
The bottom line: The film would have to be listed for use on a fire-rated door assembly.
